Furoshiki is one of those rare traditional arts that blends style, function and practicality in a beautiful manner. Letʼs be kind to our earth! Using Furoshiki gift-wrap as an ecologically friendly alternative to wrapping paper. Furoshiki literally means “Bath Spread”. Dating back to edo period (1603-1868),Furoshiki was used for carrying clothes and personal toiletries to and from the public bath house and for spreading out on the floor to undress or change clothes at the bath house. During this period, Furoshiki became very popular through out Japan. Furoshiki is now considered the eco-friendly wrapping cloth, used to transport clothes, gifts or other goods regardless of its size or shape. In fact the Ministry of the Environment, in the Japanese Government is encouraging the use of cloth (Furoshiki) for wrapping gifts just like in the old days to reduce the wasted paper usually used in gift wrappings. In their website (http://www.env.go.jp/en/focus/attach/060403-5.html) fourteen different way of stylish and elegant wraps are shown (see below)!
